Since Microsoft Support Team extensively working on this issue, the removal of KB977165 Hot-Fix update via Recovery Console seems to have fixed the problem.

Follow the below steps to remove KB977165 via Recovery Console:

Step 1: Boot into Windows Recovery Console using the CD. If you don’t get the Console, probably you have to follow this Microsoft KB307654.

If the above KB977165 removal doesn’t work then you have to repeat step 2 to uninstall the following KB’s in the same way you did above. You have to change the KB Article Number and rest of the commands are same.

Finally type the command ‘exit’ to come out of the Recovery Console and let the computer restart to come up with a good start. Hope it should work out as of now till the experts fix up things from their end.

In August 2009, Microsoft will be releasing an upgrade to windows update infrastructure. This refresh will have an impact on both Microsoft update and Windows update services. This upgrade will not be limited to the infrastructure itself but will also affect the client-side code of windows update and automatic updates.

Microsoft said that it will start the infrastructure update in late August and will take 2 months to complete it. Services updates and Windows core code updates are to be updated time to time to improve the service quality and reliability. As per MU Product Team Blog, you will not experience any settings changes or the look and feel of Automatic Updates but you will see the improvement in user interface, more visible and detailed description of updates.

The MU team further stated that the Windows Update or Automatic Updates client Software must be updated for enabling the software to successfully check for the updates. If WU or AU is enabled then the infrastructure update will be downloaded and installed automatically.

Caution: Please make sure you keep your windows up-to-date by enabling Automatic Update Feature. Always install the latest updates to enhance your computer’s security and performance.

These Spam Emails will be seen as official looking one (screenshot below) and it will arrive to your Inbox using one of these Subject Lines:

Spam Email redirects to Malicious website

This Phishing websites are coming from more than 70 different domain names including:

update.microsoft.com.11hilf.com
update.microsoft.com.11hilf.net
update.microsoft.com.1llijk.com
update.microsoft.com.1llijk.net
update.microsoft.com.hfhilf.com

Out of 41 Antivirus scans 14 were detected the file from that website as malicious as per the report by Virus Total. This email campaign ties to the top notch password stealing malware in the world called as “ZBOT” aka “Zeus Botnet”.

So if you use any Antivirus or Internet Security Suite with up-to-date virus and spyware definitions, when you are visiting the phishing or malicious websites you will see the screen similar to the one below.

Antivirus protects blocks the malicious website

You may ask “How do I know it didn’t come from Microsoft?”. Well two reasons here:

First Microsoft never sends out email attachments directly to your Email.

Second when you look deep in to this malicious website name as
update.microsoft.com.1llijk.com
you can see
1llijk.com
is the main phishing website, probably they have created
update.microsoft.com
as a sub domain or else created a folder in that name in their web server. So its obvious that we will note only the first few words in the address bar and we believe that its from trusted website.

So henceforth watch out for the entire domain name and if you found anything suspicious DO NOT go forward.

Have something informative about this issue please proceed with the comments or share it across.
